In Tina Makereti’s (Te Ātiawa, Ngāti Tūwharetoa, Ngāti Rangatahi-Matakore, Pākehā) new novel The Mires three women give birth in different countries and different decades. In the near future, they become neighbours in a coastal town in Aotearoa New Zealand. The Mires is a tender and fierce novel about the painful effects of extremism but also the power of friendship, of our environment and our young people. It asks what we do when faced with things we don’t understand. Is our impulse to destroy or connect? She joins Nic Low (Ngāi Tahu) in conversation.
