David Vass has long been captivated by the outdoors and was one of this country’s leading mountaineers, until an accident in Fiordland in 2015 ended his climbing life. His memoir, Not Set in Stone, which won the 2023 New Zealand Mountain Book of the Year, evokes his passion for peaks and, without sentiment, charts how his world has changed. David talks about the agony and the ecstasy of climbing mountains, with fellow alpine enthusiast Nic Low (Ngāi Tahu).
