Airana Ngarewa

Born and raised in Pātea, Airana Ngarewa (Ngāti Ruanui, Ngārauru, Ngāruahine) writes about Māori affairs for The Spinoff. His writing has also been published by RNZ, NZ Herald, Newsroom and Landfall. He won the short story and poetry competitions at the Ronald Hugh Morrieson Literary Awards in 2022. His debut novel The Bone Tree held the #1 NZ Fiction spot for twelve weeks overall. The Pātea Boys is his playful and poignant new collection of bilingual short stories.

Julian Wilcox

Julian Wilcox (Ngāpuhi, Te Arawa) is an award winning broadcaster and former television executive. He is fluent in Te Reo and English. He won the Qantas Best Current Affairs Presenter in 2012 and has also lectured in te reo, tikanga, whaikōrero and media. He was one of the founding members of Maori TV and has also been chief officer of operations for Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu.

Ngāhuia te Awekōtuku

Ngāhuia te Awekōtuku (Te Arawa, Tūhoe, Ngāpuhi, Waikato) is the first female Māori Emeritus Professor from a university, with degrees from the University of Auckland and University of Waikato. An Emeritus Professor, she has worked as a curator, lecturer, critic, researcher and governor in the heritage and university sectors. She is a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit, a Companion of the Royal Society of New Zealand, and a Fellow of the Auckland War Memorial Museum. She has returned to the pā, and serves on the Paepae Tapu o Ngāti Whakaue. She loves cats and chocolate. Credit: Tracey Scott
