Ā Mua

a-mua-website-event-image.png

Multi-instrumentalist Riki Gooch (Ngāti Wai, Patuharakeke, Ngaati Maahanga) and award-winning writer Tina Makereti (Te Ātiawa, Ngāti Tūwharetoa, Ngāti Rangatahi-Matakore, Pākehā) weave together sound and story, taonga pūoro and strings, in this special performance.

“Each generation coexists like droplets immersed in the ocean of time. Knowledge of whakapapa allows us to navigate the intergenerational currents that constitute this ocean of never ending beginnings. Through onamata, anamata each generation can traverse these waters, put down an anchor, and take in the view. This is a Māori futurism.”  – Hana Burgess & Te Kahuratai Painting, ‘Onamata, anamata: A whakapapa perspective of Māori futurisms’ (2020)

Taking Māori futurism, whakapapa and taiao (the natural world) as its starting points, Ā Mua spirals and forms connections across time.
