Theia is an Ōtautahi-born artist (Waikato-Tainui, Ngāti Tīpa) who pushes boundaries and challenges social injustices through her edgy alt-pop bangers. You’ll also hear her singing exquisite angelic waiata that pay tribute to her tūpuna wāhine as part of her reo rangatira project – the award-winning TE KAAHU.
Her work as Theia has drawn a loyal fan base across the globe, receiving critical acclaim from the likes of Rolling Stone, Clash and Billboard Magazine. Her songs have earned her a multitude of nominations at the New Zealand Music Awards and the Waiata Māori Music Awards, as well as commercial radio play in New Zealand, Australia, and Asia, alongside chart success. She has toured NZ and Australia and has opened for international acts such as Sia, Mika and Peaches.
All the while Theia has continued to enjoy success with her reo Māori project TE KAAHU, which she launched in 2020. The project’s debut album TE KAAHU O RANGI was released to critical acclaim in 2022 and saw her awarded the Taite Prize for Best Independent Debut. Accolades also include nominations in the Rolling Stone NZ Awards, the NZ Music Awards (AMAs), the APRA Maioha Award, the Waiata Māori Music Awards and the Student Radio Network Awards. It also featured in many ‘Top Albums of 2022’ lists, including Rolling Stone, CKUA (#36) and RNZ, Flying Out (#4).
