Ralph Bungard

Ralph Bungard established Three Boys Brewery in Ōtautahi Christchurch 20 years ago after a career in plant science. The move from science to brewing came after working as a scientist in the UK where he got to drink some fantastic locally brewed beers. The thing he loves most about brewing beer is taking beautiful ingredients and creating a product that people really love. For him, brewing ticks a lot of boxes – it is a great mix of science and art, with a little bit of engineering and economics thrown in. Over the years Ralph has contributed to New Zealand’s beer industry and was heavily involved in the Brewers Guild of New Zealand in its early years and continues to be active as a judge. When he is not at the brewery, he will either be in his vegetable garden, playing cricket, or fishing and tramping in the hills somewhere.
