Peter S. Field is Head of the School of Humanities and Associate Professor of American History at the University of Canterbury. After graduating from Columbia University, where was classmates with Barack Obama, he held research posts at Yale, Princeton and the Gilder Lehrman Institute for American History. The author of several books, including Ralph Waldo Emerson: The Making of a Democratic Intellectual and The Crisis of the Standing Order, he has recently completed a history of the United States entitled The Promise and Paradox of Freedom. In 2016 he served as Garwood Visiting Professor of Statesmanship at Princeton University. His current project is Friends and Fellow Citizens, a study of Abraham Lincoln.
