Jarrod Gilbert

Dr Jarrod Gilbert is the Director of Independent Research Solutions and a sociologist at the University of Canterbury. He conducted one of the most in-depth criminal ethnographies anywhere in the world in his study on gangs. He has subsequently led teams conducting research on numerous topics including criminal desistance, transnational organised crime, alcohol-related harms, and a number of programme evaluations. He is currently on the boards of the Salisbury Street Foundation and the Cholmondeley Children’s Centre and he co-chairs the Wellness Wellbeing and Insights Group at the Department of Corrections. Jarrod is also a member of the Arms Engagement Group and he regularly advises numerous government and non-government agencies. Jarrod wrote Patched the History of Gangs in New Zealand, A Rebel in Exile, and co-edited Criminal Justice: a New Zealand Introduction. He is also a columnist at The New Zealand Herald.
