Maurice Gee 22 August 1931–12 June 2025

We are saddened by the news that the great writer Maurice Gee has died. Gee wrote more than 30 novels for both adults and children, including Under the Mountain and The Plumb Trilogy, which is commonly regarded as one of the most significant achievements in New Zealand literature. What a remarkable literary legacy.

Warmest congratulations to our beloved Morrin Rout who has been made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) announced this morning in the King’s Birthday Honours for her services to the arts, particularly literature.

A dedicated reader and unstoppable champion of writers, Morrin was the co-literary director of the Christchurch Writers Festival pre-WORD Christchurch from its inception in 1997 until 2012. She was also a founder of the Hagley Writers Institute, co-presented RNZ’s Bookmarks show, and still talks about books with a dedicated focus on Aotearoa writers on her Plains FM show Bookenz which started in 1994. Morrin is such a treasured member of the WORD Christchurch whānau. Please join us in congratulating her!

👉Have a dedicated place in which to write - the corner of the kitchen table will do, but just make sure it's the same place. It's all part of building a sense of routine around your writing practice - and routine strengthens practise.

👉Anger. Disgust. Joy. Laughter. Despair. Wonder. A book that ignites all these feelings, and sometimes all at once, is a book that might trouble us.

👉But being troubled by our reading is good!

👉 It means we are fully involved and are thinking for ourselves about this world we live in.

Kirsty's short story collection Pretty Ugly was shortlisted for the 2025 Jann Medlicott Acorn Prize for Fiction, so many thanks to @newzealandbookawards for getting these tips from Kirsty!

Michael Bennett's award-winning trilogy of crime novels following fictional detective Hana Westerman follow a career writing and directing programmes such as Outrageous Fortune and The Gone, to the 2010 feature film Matariki, to writing a graphic novel in collaboration, and his mahi on the wrongful murder conviction of Teina Pora.

Crime writing has come a long way since Dame Ngaio Marsh set a handful of her popular Inspector Alleyn tales among the landscapes of Aotearoa, shifting from puzzling entertainments to modern tales delving deeply into people, places, and psychology.

Child welfare expert turned mystery writer Marie Connolly is joined by YA thriller writer Heather McQuillan and past Ngaios finalist for a fascinating korero on the art and craft of thriller writing, the importance of people and place, and what makes Dame Ngaio's home region of Canterbury a great place for storytellers. Ngaio Marsh Awards judge and local Canterbury librarian Fiona Jay will cross-examine the culprits."
