We’re handing over WORD’s beautiful venue The Faraway Near for a mashup of free workshops, stalls and hands-on creative crafts. Check out The Conscious Club‘s Maker’s Market of local ethical goods, the Rainbow Reading Club with Emma Barnes, Kerry Donovan Brown and Chris Tse, writing workshops with Dominic Hoey and Claudia Jardine, and an open mic with RikTheMost for you poets on the rise. If you’re under 25 and into making meaning rather than consuming it, come on down.

All afternoon:
MAKER STATIONS Drop in at any time for a range of fun free hands-on activities. Learn the art of zine making, break out the marker pens for black-out poetry, or turn your art and words into wearable art via the badge making stand. Bring yourself along, take new ideas and crafts home.
CONSCIOUS CLUB MARKET The Conscious Club is a team of diverse Ōtautahi-based wahine who give a damn about the planet, and who use storytelling, creativity and fun to create awareness about ethical and sustainable living. Find out what it’s all about while browsing and buying at their makers’ market, filled with beautiful local, ethically-made goods.
2pm – 3pm: MINI MASTERCLASS WITH DOMINIC HOEY
Creative writing workshop for ages 16 – 25.
Poet, musician and best-selling author Dominic Hoey has been running writing workshops since 2015. Here, he presents a fast-paced creative writing workshop for writers aged between 16 and 25, open to everyone from poets to song writers to journalists to novelists – including beginners in any form. This mini session focuses on creativity, plus touches on technique so you’ll leave with the rudiments of good writing. You’ll get the most out of it if you bring along a piece of writing that you are working on.

3pm – 4.15pm: QUEER BOOK CLUB
If you’re a queer reader (or writer), come on down to meet renowned writers Chris Tse, Emma Barnes and Kerry Donovan-Brown for this relaxed LGBTQIA+ book club. Bring along a queer book or three that you love and would recommend to others. Join in the chats about what’s on everyone’s reading pile as well as queer visibility in books and media. Even if you’d just like to listen to the kōrero – come on down!

Comic poetry for writers aged 10+
If you like to make rhymes
and write poems in four lines,
come practice these specialties
to better mock your enemies!
This poetry workshop teaches rangatahi how to write short comical poems. To get started, bring along a list of: five animals you love, five places you hate, five types of shoe, five foods you might find in a bakery.
