Ruben Miller
Ruben Miller is an Auckland-based forensic scientist and author of The Blood Says Otherwise.
For more than twenty years, he worked at the frontline of forensic science in Aotearoa, attending serious crime scenes and helping to interpret the evidence left behind. His work has taken him into mortuaries, courtrooms and the spaces in between - where the scientific meets the human, where certainty is often hard to find, and where black-and-white thinking can leave a lot to be desired.
The Blood Says Otherwise draws on these experiences to explore not just how crimes are solved, but what they reveal about the people involved: victims, offenders, investigators and the systems that surround them. Written with honesty and restraint, the book offers a perspective on true crime that moves beyond spectacle, focusing instead on complexity, doubt, and the long after-effects of violence.
Ruben now works independently as a forensic scientist, providing case reviews and expert insight, works in criminal justice reform, and speaks widely about the realities of forensic and investigative work, the limits of science, and the human stories that sit behind the evidence.
