Phil and Sue Bagshaw
Until retirement in 2010, Phil Bagshaw was Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Otago Christchurch, where he practised as a specialist General Surgeon, taught surgery, and did research. In 2007, he opened a charity hospital for patients who can’t access public hospital care and can’t afford private care. He chairs the Trust that runs it and works as a volunteer.
His wife Sue Bagshaw set up a Youth One Stop Shop to provide free holistic services to young people aged 10-24 in 1995, and works one day a week as a doctor there, in addition to teaching medical students and doing research. She is currently Chair of a Trust building a Youth Hub to include housing as well has helping services, creativity and recreation with employment opportunities. They have had four children of whom Andrew was the eldest, and seven grandchildren. They have lived in Aotearoa NZ since 1981.
