MERCHANT, MINER, MANDARIN

Historical research can surprise and bring fresh insights into people’s lives. And sometimes it destroys stereotypes.

The co-authors of Merchant Miner Mandarin: The Life and Times of the Remarkable Choie Sew HoyJenny Sew Hoy Agnew and Trevor Agnew, offer an illustrated talk about the part played by early Chinese migrants in New Zealand’s colonial history. The authors have spent years researching the experiences of Cantonese men and women in 19th century Aotearoa-New Zealand. Using photographs and personal accounts, they show how and why many early Cantonese migrants thrived despite multiple challenges.
