HOW TO WRITE FOR YOUNGER READERS

Please note the start time is 10 minutes later than advertsied in the printed programme, to allow time for people attending the Margaret Mahy Lecture to attend both sessions.

How do writers create stories that our kids and young adults will love, and recognise themselves in, and be challenged by? Hear from three writers who know what they’re doing when it comes to feeding young minds: picture book and junior fiction author Kyle Mewburn (Old Huhu, Dinosaur Rescue); middle-grade fantasy writer Graci Kim, whose Gifted Clans series has been picked up by Rick Riordan in the US; and Shilo Kino, whose The Pōrangi Boy is a finalist in this year’s children’s book awards. They chat with fellow short-listee Tania (T. K.) Roxborogh.
