Aotearoa has a wealth of talent writing exciting children’s novels, rivalling any of the series from overseas that dominate the bestseller lists. Three of them are right here in Christchurch, and the best thing of all is that kids get to meet the writers and hear about their stories first hand.
Tania Roxborogh‘s Charlie Tangaroa and the Creature from the Sea incorporates Māori myth into an adventure, much in the vein of Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson stories use Greek myths.
In Heather McQuillan‘s Avis and the Promise of Dragons, a girl lands a dream job as a pet-sitter. But the animals in Dr Malinda Childes’ backyard are as eccentric as their owner!
Bill Nagelkerke has written a delightful historical adventure, The Ghosts on the Hill, set in Lyttelton that will fire the imagination of Christchurch readers.
Meet the writers, hear them read and chat to school librarian Zac McCallum, and have your questions ready!
