CABINET OF CURIOSITIES

Our ever-popular tiny lecture series returns as five writers share their weird and wonderful deep obsessions. What will Emily Perkins, Gabriel Krauze, Andrew Paul Wood, Melody Thomas and Juanita Hepi (Kāi Tahu, Waitaha, Kāti Māmoe, Ngāti Mutunga, Moriori, Ngāti Kahungunu, Ngāti Wai, Ngāpuhi) reveal to us? Each lecture is just 12 minutes long and full of possibilities. What will be revealed when the cabinet of curiosities is opened? Hosted by Erin Harrington. This is always a sell-out, so book now.

Andrew Paul Wood

Andrew Paul Wood has been writing provocatively about all branches of the arts in New Zealand for nearly 20 years. He is an internationally recognised authority on the poetry of German Jewish refugee poet Karl Wolfskehl, pavlovas, and antique ceramics. He is art editor for takahē magazine and recently moved from Christchurch to Timaru to keep an eye on his parents.

Emily Perkins

Emily Perkins' most recent novel Lioness (Bloomsbury) was awarded the Jann Medlicott Acorn Prize for Fiction in this year's Ockham New Zealand Book Awards. Other books include the Women’s Prize longlisted The Forrests, winner of the Montana Medal for Fiction Novel About My Wife, and Not Her Real Name, which won the Geoffrey Faber Memorial Prize in the UK. Emily also writes for theatre, film and television. She lives in Wellington with her husband, artist Karl Maughan. Credit: Ebony Lamb

Erin Harrington

Dr Erin Harrington is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Humanities at the University of Canterbury. Her academic work on film, especially horror media, has been featured everywhere from community radio to BBC Culture and the New York Times, and her arts and theatre writing has appeared in publications across Aotearoa. Gabriel Krauze

Gabriel Krauze grew up in London in a Polish family and was drawn to a life of crime and gangs from an early age. He has left that world behind and is recapturing his life through writing. Who They Was, his first novel, was long-listed for the Dylan Thomas Prize and the Booker Prize.

Juanita Hepi

Juanita Hepi (Kāi Tahu, Ngāti Kahungunu, Ngātiwai, Ngāpuhi) walks around in a perpetual state of confusion telling yarns to find peace. She has some letters after her name, MMIL, GDip Tch & Ln, BA Acting. Juanita is a haututū, māmā and self proclaimed artivist. When not lecturing, writing, curating, producing, directing, performing, advising, mentoring, adapting, dramaturging, or māmā-ing, she reads reference books, plays capitals of the world on sporcle, gets pleasantly lost in the notion of there being no free will and rote learns Māori and latin names for NZ native plants.

Melody Thomas

Melody Thomas is the creator and host of the podcast series The Good Sex Project, released through Stuff in 2023, as well as the multi-award winning sex and relationships podcast BANG!, made for RNZ. In 2020, Melody co-founded the podcast production company Popsock Media with Kirsten Johnstone, and has written for, consulted on and produced various podcasts since, including The Lake, a series investigating the historic abuse of children in the 1970s at the Lake Alice Psychiatric Facility, which won a gold medal at the New York Festival Radio Awards, and two Voyager Media Awards in 2022. As well as podcast mahi, Melody works as writer and columnist for Capital magazine and SUNDAY magazine. She is currently working on her first book.

Gabriel Krauze has an extraordinary presence. The British writer’s incendiary autobiographical novel, Who They Was, longlisted for the 2020 Booker Prize, tells the story of a young man straddling two cultures: the university where he is studying English literature and the murky underworld of London gang warfare.
