Whether you’re an old hand at book collecting, or eyeing your groaning bookshelves and thinking of taking the plunge, this very special workshop is for you. It’s an interactive opportunity to learn from two experienced booksellers, Wigtown’s Shaun Bythell (The Diary of a Bookseller) and local second-hand bookseller and former publisher Brian Phillips. Over two hours, they will divulge everything you could possibly want to know about the fascinating and wonderfully complex world of book collecting. Places limited. Subjects to be covered, as we traverse the joys of book collecting will include:
How to identify genuine First Editions. How collectable are they?
Is your signed copy genuine?
How do second hand booksellers determine their prices?
Why have some values diminished in recent years?
Buying second hand books online
Buying second hand books at auction.
All about dust jackets
What should you collect?
10 second-hand books worth hunting for.
What not to collect.
Selling your books to second-hand booksellers.
The terminology of booksellers (do you know what ’soiling’ means? What on earth is an ffep? What is the difference between ‘mint’, ‘fine’ and ‘near fine’? What is the difference between a case-bound book and a hard-bound book?). If you have a favourite piece of unfathomable bookseller terminology come and share it with us and we will attempt to unravel it for you.
Flaws to look for in second-hand books. Foxing, damp staining, shadows, cocked spines, bowed covers, loose binding and more.
How to care for your books.
Valuing your books – all attendees are invited to bring one book along and we will examine the various ways in which this could be valued, explaining the potential pitfalls of certain online sites for valuation purposes.
