Join the WORD board

February 22, 2024

WORD Christchurch is looking for 2-3 new trustees to join the board of the South Island’s largest festival of books, stories and ideas after the retirement of 2 long serving and muchloved trustees. WORD produces an annual festival every spring alongside other projects and events throughout the year that celebrate words in all their forms.

The role of our volunteer board is to guide WORD’s direction and priorities, ensuring these are valued and implemented by our small but amazing team. Our trustees offer financial oversight, ensure responsible use of resources, enhance relationships with our stakeholders and monitor legal compliance along with excellent conversation.

We welcome applications from Ōtautahi-based people with previous governance experience and/or expertise, skill or interest in any of the following: te ao Māori; Pasifika; books, publishing and storytelling; commercial practices; fundraising; and stakeholder engagement.

We are interested to hear from you if you have experience in these areas and want to develop your governance experience. We especially welcome applications from people with the experience we are looking for that reflect the diverse communities of Ōtautahi Christchurch.

We offer you:

Experience  in governance. Supportive and generous colleagues on the board.  World-class events to attend and the opportunity to support an organisation that brings wellbeing and strengthens the identity of our Christchurch communities through the arts. Party invites!

Time commitment:

Trust meetings are usually held on the third Tuesday of the month from 5pm. It’s not a massive time commitment, about 5 hours per month is the usual. In addition, trustees may be asked to support the WORD mahi in a subcommittee. Half of our board members are connected to our kaupapa of words in all their forms, and the other half bring management, financial and legal expertise.

Information required for you to apply:

Please email a short cover letter, tell us why you would like to join our board, and attach your CV.

If you would like to talk to a board member to find out more about what we do, and how you could help, Chair Vicki Blyth is happy to hear from you at

Applications close 28 March.
