June 4, 2021
We are proud to announce an exciting and extremely cool initiative for the 2021 WORD Christchurch Festival (25-29 August): The Faraway Near.
BRINGING THE OUT-THERE OVER HERE
Part of our mission is giving you folk access to astonishing international authors. But there’s a pandemic on. International travel is off. We can’t bring any writers over. And we’re all sick of Zoom, right?
BRINGING THE FARAWAY NEAR
Which is why we’re creating The Faraway Near: our custom digital venue that has the intimacy of a night (or afternoon!) at the pub with friends – and your favourite writer.
The Faraway Near is a bar with ten tables of ten. Grab a glass of wine and a seat, and settle in for some deep storytelling and conversation with a guest – sitting life-sized at your table via freestanding FHD display.
Our guests are broadcast from their own homes around the world, and appear in informal conversation with a skilled interviewer. Drinks will be served throughout, and you’ll have a chance to ask questions of your guest as well.
It’s a secret! But one worth waiting for. While you’ll have to hold tight until 6 July for our programme launch to find out, we can promise a lineup every bit as exciting as in the past, from beloved favourites to rising stars.
YOU CAN HELP MAKE IT HAPPEN!
WORD has been selected by Boosted NZ and Rātā Foundation as one of ten Christchurch arts organisations for the Boost Ōtautahi campaign. So we are crowdfunding to make this dream a reality and to bring to Ōtautahi a ground-breaking experience created in response to the challenges of these times.
We launched our campaign on 3 June and by the end of the next day had already hit 64% of our goal to raise $8000. And for every dollar you donate, Rātā Foundation will match it (up to $3000), so you get double the bang for your buck.
We believe The Faraway Near may even be a world first. Now wouldn’t that be something to be proud of? Click the picture below to see how you can donate.
